Just for completeness - there is an equivalent port-mirroring traffic amplification trick on routers that is more powerful - it allows to create a controlled bps stream, not just up to full link capacity. I.e. when You need 8Gbps of IPv4 traffic out of 10GE interface on a router, use cascaded port-mirroring with a cutoff FW filter matching on TTL.
I used it back in mid-2000s when 10GE traffic generators were at a premium but I had plenty of routers in the lab
