Adding a EX2300-C POE+ switch to a Pair of EX3300 Switches in a Virtual Chassis Configuration

I currently have 2 EX3300 switches setup as a virtual chassis. I have setup a number of vlans that is routable (RVIs) in the VC setup. I just received a EX2300-C POE+ unit and want to add this switch to my current setup. The EX2300 did not come with the virtual chassis license. So I assume I cannot add the EX2300 as a new member to the virtual chassis setup.

What is the best option to connect the EX2300 to the EX3300 virtual chassis configuration? Additionally, will I need to create the same vlans on the EX2300 that is on the EX3300 switches? Does the vlans on the EX2300 needs to be rountable (RVI) as well?

Ex2300's can only VC with other 2300's so your only option is to connect the ex2300 to the existing VC with one or more uplinks configured as trunk ports. If you configure a multi-member ae interface you can avoid spanning tree. You will need to configure the vlans on the 2300 but not rvi's. You may want to configure an rvi for management access if you don't have a dedicated mgmt network in place already.

Not sure what you mean by "If you configure a multi-member ae interface you can avoid spanning tree".

The plan is to use 10G port xe-0/1/1 and xe1/1/1 on the EX3300 switches as a LAGG trunk port to the EX2300 10G ports.. Will that work?

Yes exactly--that is what an ae (aggregated Ethernet) interface is.

When I see changing reachability, I wonder about the spanning tree status.

Are there loops in this system?

What is the spanning tree status of the ports in the path?

The other item I would check is port capacity for bandwidth, is anything potentially overloaded.

We did turned off SNMP checks of this switch, but messages are still generating.

New EX2300-48 PoE, just fired up, went to ezsetup, and when I input the new passwords for root, I get the following

error: op script fails with exit code 0x4500

Try entering the password again.

Enter new root password:

Any idea what this is for, or do I need to RMA.?

Is there any known issue with running 15.1R5 on an EX4550 in a virtual chassis?  I tried updating a pair of EX4550 from 12.3 to 15.1R5 and the devices refused to cluster. Virtual chassis membership only showed the local switch when viewed on each member.  Returning to 12.3 saw the issue dissapear.

I would recommend you just stay on 12.3 for the time being.  Support for 12.3 has been extended until at least 6/30/2018.  If you are going to run any version of 15.1 on legacy (non-ELS) EX switches, you should use a minimum of 15.1R6-S2 at this time.  I do not know if you would see the same situation with 15.1R6-S2.

I do assume for your 2-member EX4550 VC that no split-detect was enabled, yes?  Without this, you will see the VC split upon a reboot.  Reboot is part of upgrade process.

How would I go about undoing this change?

[edit ethernet-switching-options analyzer VOIP]
'output'
Analyzer output interface ge-3/0/47.0 should not be added to any VLAN
error: configuration check-out failed

I attempted to add that interface to a VLAN. I want to utilize ge-3/0/47.0 as an access port and add it to a VLAN. It will not commit changes due to this. I no longer need this port configured as a mirror.

delete ethernet-switching-options analyzer VOIP output interface ge-3/0/47.0

To find out what delete command you need just run show | display set and then replace "set" with "delete"

Spanning Tree on ELS EX switches

$

Hi,

I have been testing the "bpdu-block-on-edge" command on an EX3400 on 15.1X53-D56. I have noticed that the recovery timeout appears to now be configured on the interface rather than globally.

When I delibrately loop two ports the port is disabled.

xxx> show spanning-tree interface ge-0/0/2

Spanning tree interface parameters for instance 0

Interface Port ID Designated Designated Port State Role
port ID bridge ID Cost
ge-0/0/2 128:490 128:490 4096.e8b6c2663b61 20000 BLK DIS (Bpdu-Incon)

But the port never recovers.

Also I can not find a command to clear it manually!

xxx> clear ethernet-switching recovery-timeout interface ge-0/0/2

xxx> show spanning-tree interface ge-0/0/2

Spanning tree interface parameters for instance 0

Interface Port ID Designated Designated Port State Role
port ID bridge ID Cost
ge-0/0/2 128:490 128:490 4096.e8b6c2663b61 20000 BLK DIS (Bpdu-Incon)

Please could anyone help?

Try

[edit protocols layer2-contorl bpdu-block interface interface-name]
user@switch# set disable-timeout seconds

and

user@switch> clear error bpdu interface (all | interface-name)

Re: EX4500 mac table grows to limit, all mac ages are 0

Just to bump this a bit. I have 4 of these "top of room" EX4500 virtual chassis switches. On 2 of them I can clearly see ages on some mac addresses, and they count down. There are many macs that have an age of 0. On the other 2 switches, all macs have an age of 0. The switch that isn't causing me a problem doesn't have misbehaving machines so it's mac table is reasonable.

I'm wondering why a mac address gets an age of 0 though. I'll have to study that.

Hi Wdudys,

The manual clear works! thanks.

However, I am still having an issue with the auto recovery. I do not seem to be getting the same options as you:

{master:0}[edit protocols layer2-control bpdu-block interface ge-0/0/2]
lab@xxx# set ?
Possible completions:
+ apply-groups Groups from which to inherit configuration data
+ apply-groups-except Don't inherit configuration data from these groups
disable Disable bpdu-block on a port
drop Drop xSTP BPDUs
{master:0}[edit protocols layer2-control bpdu-block interface ge-0/0/2]
lab@xxx# set disable ?
Possible completions:
<[Enter]> Execute this command
+ apply-groups Groups from which to inherit configuration data
+ apply-groups-except Don't inherit configuration data from these groups
drop Drop xSTP BPDUs
| Pipe through a command

As you can see, there is no "disable-timeout" option.

IP source guard on ELS EX3400

$

The below link states that IP Source guard is supported on EX switches with ELS.

https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/task/configuration/port-security-ip-source-guard-cli-els.html

But when I go to configure it, the option is not there. Can anyone explain why this is?

{master:0}[edit vlans VOIP-HOSTS forwarding-options dhcp-security]
lab@xxx# set ?
Possible completions:
+ apply-groups Groups from which to inherit configuration data
+ apply-groups-except Don't inherit configuration data from these groups
arp-inspection Enable dynamic ARP inspection
> dhcpv6-options DHCPv6 option processing for snooped packets
> group Define a DHCP security group for overriding defaults
neighbor-discovery-inspection Enable neighbor discovery inspection
no-dhcp-snooping Disable dhcp snooping
no-dhcpv6-snooping Disable DHCPv6 snooping
> option-82 DHCP option-82 processing for snooped packets

Re: IP source guard on ELS EX3400

maybe because of the fact that the ex3400 does not run ELS ( the 4300 does run ELS) so you have to google for the old syntax
